Description
Pedestrian bridges can be useful for linking buildings or popular destinations (e.g. shopping centers, large schools, recreational facilities, parking garages, light rail stations). They are also useful for linking areas separated by highways of freeways, where at-grade crossing are not permitted. Pedestrian bridges, like any other bridge, must be long enough to clear the obstacle which is to be crossed and high enough not to interfere with whatever passes beneath the bridge.

Application
Pedestrian bridges can be used in three situations, including: (1) crossing interstate highways, (2) crossing natural physical obstacles like rivers, or (3) crossing railroads. Design
Design of pedestrian bridge normally follows the same principles as for other bridges. However, because they are normally significantly lighter than vehicular bridges, they are more vulnerable to vibration and therefore dynamics effects are often given more attention in design.
To ensure pedestrian bridges are accessible to disabled and other mobility-impaired people, careful consideration is nowadays also given to provision of access lifts or ramps, as required by relevant legislation.
Features
Provision of suitable access for wheelchairs and cyclists is often specified for pedestrian bridges. Access ramps must be provided and restricted to a maximum gradient. The consequent length of ramps where access is from the level of the road or rail track over which the bridge spans is generally much longer than the bridge itself. The form of construction suitable for the ramps may have a dominant influence on the final form of the bridge.
The width of a pedestrian bridge is usually quite modest, just sufficient to permit free passage in both directions for pedestrians. Occasionally the bridge will have segregated provision for pedestrians and cyclists, in which case it will need to be wider. Parapets are provided for the safety of both the pedestrians and traffic flow. Pedestrian bridgeS over railway lines are required to have higher parapets and be provided with solid panels directly over the rail tracks.

History
First bridges in history were pedestrian bridges and they were made of wood. Ancient Rome started making stone bridges in the 2nd century BC over the Tiber River. Some of these ancient stone footbridges with arches still stand today. One of them is Ponte Fabricio which was built in 62 BC and it still has some of its original materials. Today, modern footbridges are made of wood, rope, metal and concrete.
